The smash-hit Broadway biopic MJ the Musical has finally arrived on London’s West End, and Tony award-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell is the man behind the iconic looks. Working closely with the director, Paul has expertly replicated many of the singer’s iconic looks from his 1992 Dangerous World Tour.
The MJ Musical has been a box office hit since it launched on Broadway in 2022, with Tazewell earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Costume Design for a Musical for his work on the original production. MJ the Musical would go on to garner an additional nine nominations and four wins, including Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, and Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost. The original Broadway cast recording was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Opening Night of MJ the Musical will be March 27 in London, with previews currently in swing. Tazewell, one of the most recognized and respected designers in the industry, has created the stunning costumes the cast will wear. The New York-based designer was the man behind the original costumes in the Broadway production and has brought that experience and knowledge to London for the new Show.
“Nobody’s music has transcended the globe more than Michael Jackson, and it has been an incredible experience bringing his unique look to the stage in both the Broadway show, and most recently, the London West End production,” said Paul Tazewell. “Throughout his career, MJ sported some truly memorable looks and I’m honoured to have helped bring some of those to the stage.”
With the Show covering over 25 of Michael Jackson’s biggest hits, from “Thriller” to “Smooth Criminal,” it includes some of the star’s most iconic looks. As he does with all of his award-winning costumes, Paul paid meticulous attention to ensure exact replicas of classic regalia, such as the black sequin jacket, tilted fedora, sparkle glove, and white socks that appeared in multiple concert performances.
MJ the Musical is now showing at the Prince Edward Theatre in London, with more information available at https://london.mjthemusical.com/.
